Sigma Nu Fraternity at the University of Iowa is proud to announce the introduction of the Virgil M. Hancher scholarship. Virgil M. Hancher served as president of Sigma Nu before becoming president of the University of Iowa from 1940-1964. Recognized for his academic achievements and tireless effort to improve higher education standards at the University of Iowa, Hancher was recognized as a Rhodes Scholar in 1938. His impact on the University was profound and led to the commemoration of his honor with the Hancher Auditorium, a nationally renowned center for fine arts and theater. His legacy is not just limited to the University at Iowa, however; President Eisenhower twice appointed him to important committees in 1956 and as a member of the U.S. delegation to the United Nations in 1959. Hancher died on January 30th, 1965. Throughout his life, Hancher demonstrated a commitment to education and inspiring others to achieve their fullest. We intend to award this scholarship to the individual who represents the ideals of Sigma Nu fraternity and the late Virgil M. Hancher.
